My Place At Los Balos, El Medano…
The Story
It´s curious how my life spins around Tenerife. Everyone has a story, this is mine, although it´s really all about The Place. The Beach House was first built in 1935. My husband’s grandfather acquired the land, more or less, in 1932. The main purpose was to have a summer house near the sea as his youngest son was asthmatic, doctor’s reccomendation…
The story behind is quite sad as this beloved boy enjoyed The Beach House until 1937, when he was brutally killed on the battle field during the Spanish Civil War. Far away and north of this sun blessed land. Since then, this chocolate box of many rooms and patios has been a place of reunion and friends. Illuminated by petrolleum lamps. Washed and bathed by constant wind and waves. The family did not return until 1950 when my father-in-law decided it was a great plan for the summer holidays, bringing his wife and three kids to Medano.
Life is full of coincidences that tell a tale of love, pain, families, friendship, happiness and more. My surname is Edward. My husband is Edward. The boy for whom The Place was built was Edward and our son is Edward. The Beach House was built by a Renshaw. My mother-in-law’s family was British, Davidson. And last but not least, I am half Scottish and half Spanish. Preferably, in this world of increasing nationalisms, British, although, Celtic to the core.
The first time I turned up in Medano was 1987, on a business trip to the South. I managed to fit in a surprise: my British great aunt who spent the winter months in this non-famous desert since 1962, was throwing a unique birthday party…
The Dalai Lama would say Coincidences are much more than a random ocurrence which is void of any deeper meaning…
Sinchronicity is woven into the very fabric of our existence. Described by Jung as the magical effect archetype, a trait universal to all human beings, innate and intertwined into the collective unconscious. It’s something so damn magical that neither myself nor any other person could put into words, the beauty of its simplicity and divine construction. It happens in your life, yesterday, tomorrow, today, right now, whether you are conscious of it or not.
I’d heard about the place even before I was born but it wasn’t until 1994 when I started to use The Beach House as a summer and winter hideout. It was simply magic. New husband, new kid and this Beach Vida Bling House, full of secrets, antiques, patios, stories, other childhoods, marriages, love nest, family, grandparents, aunts, cousins, mothers, friends, death, sadness plus a never-ending sense of peace, mischief and, once again, magic…
We enjoyed The Place (Sitio Renshaw) until, more or less, 2005, when we decided to build this beautiful, concrete, modern complex of more than 30 apartments, sharing with many others. A change to something new: Los Balos, El Medano. Since then, many have come and gone, enjoying this unique location that walks out onto a very special beach. A beautiful bay stormed by a nearly never-ending Northeast blast. Perfect for windsurfers and kiters, families, lovers, friends, kids. A place to disconnect from this tremendous busy world. To fall in love with these incredible water sports and unbelievable lifestyle. Where new and old naturally come together. Peace and laughter echoe rolling waves. We are a small boat anchored on the top of a wee cove. At our feet: sand and tosca. We are ocean.
I am so lucky and grateful for enjoying this place now and for more than 20 years. My house is located where the lounge and patios used to be. A treasure that keeps my heart beating when I am far away. Today, I am here, barefoot, hair knotted by wind and sand. See you on the beach, life is just a moment; this one, grasp it and make it yours!
