Hitting The Planet, New York
Hitting the planet, New York. Although I love to be all year round on this unique beach, living “la vida bling” here at El Médano. Feeling the wind, ticking to the tides, enjoying the winter windsurf slalom action but sometimes you have got to hit the planet.
One of my favourite cities is New York. She fits me like a glove. Always visited. January and February are my chosen months. Cold winter days and hardly any tourists, make you sense you are, simply, a New Yorker.
I am an art addict so the plan to live again a life I lead years ago with my friend and artist, COT, felt very appealing. An emergent talent, keep an eye on her. Unbelievable abstract art, nearly sculpture. Developed in resin, they spill beyond the canvas to become a harmony of chromatic rythms. Colours that touch your heart and simply call, to be caressed. An easy trip that also gave me the possiblity of spending precious time with Bea Merry. My goddaughter and creator of Los Balos, El Medano´s logo and previous web.
Many describe this metropolis as hard. Some feel overwhelmed and scared of its inmensity. Others, me included, simply feel the freeness of the place. You can be anyone, anything. Nothing is impossible.
Hence, we have walked the town from 6th Avenue on 27th Street to Franklin St, popping in and out of galleries, getting lost and found, discovering. On an adventure to introduce an artist and her unique art. A come together in our friendship. Unbreakable over time.
I cannot say the NY private art panorama has been a let down. Although the Chelsea and Downtown galleries have impressed me. I was expecting more moderness and something new. Contemporary art is always on the move. The artist is constantly exploring different paths and techniques in a unique concept of beauty.
I totally fell for Wang Guangle´s Duo Color. Pace Gallery presents this chinese artist for the third time in a solo show in New York. Interesting also the incredible skill and simplicity proposed by japanese, Etsuko Ichikawa, here included is an exquisite film capturing how she creates her body of work, based on drawings made by fire and smoke of hot molten glass. Her art is tremendously engaging.
Last but not least, chilean artist Sebastian Errazuriz. Tackling everything from political artworks to giant public art projects. Experimental furniture to product design and women´s shoes to motorcycles. His work is always surprising and compelling. Us being at his pre-opening was a total coincidence. Consequently, listening to him talk about his work was a luxury.
We were so lucky to meet Juan Miguel Palacios and visit his studio. A spanish artist based in Brooklyn. Unbelievable portraits made on concrete. His series Wounds, Set Me Free and Assaults conform a different visual approach. Magnificent and broken women come to life on an unimaginable canvas.
Ps. Stuffed myself on hamburgers. Here go my favourite places: P.J. Clarke´s, The Odeon or Rue 57. Do not miss out on having a drink at Boom, Boom Room, a glittering room of late-night lore. Located on the top of The Standard, an opportunity to enjoy the Meatpacking district nightlife and the dramatic city views that turn magical at sundown. Mr Brainwash´s and his Life Is Beautiful is also on exhibit at 24th Street, Tagliatella Galleries…
